Care Bear checks are just one of the many products featuring the illustrations of artist Elana Kucharik. Originally the artwork was used for greeting cards in 1981 by American Greetings. In 1983, Kenner turned them out as teddy bears. Over 40 million were sold between '83 and '87 bringing in over $2 billion in sales! Then came a TV series and three movies. Care Bear checks are just another way these multi-colored bears have been marketed. Originally they were ten but over the years the numbers have grown and spin-offs like the Werebears have appeared in Britain. Care Bear checks are sometimes but not always available.
